Swimming along

I went back to the pool today. One of the life guards asked me where I had been and I couldn’t think of a clever answer so I told him the truth. “I’ve been depressed.’ He went on to ask me if there was anything he could do to help and reminded me that swimming is good for depression. You know what else is good for depression? Having someone you barely know act like they care. Since I lost my best friend and mother there have been times I have felt so ALONE. I have gone for days not talking to anyone, just me and the dog. To have someone you barely know notice that you haven’t been around and give you a big smile can help so much when you feel fragile and heartbroken. I’ll go back to the pool because I love to swim and  I know it’s good for me and I’ll make sure to give the next stranger I see a big smile, because you never know.

I grew up in San Francisco in the 60's. I lived in a world of sex, drugs and rock and roll. After a long stretch working on my tan I have joyfully found my way back to radio. Because you can't fight it; when it's in your blood. I play music on KPTZ.org.

  1. Buzzy,

I just happened on your blog … I found it as a result of searching for some info on Scoop Nisker. I am a long time Bay Area native who grew up with KSAN. You can probably see some connection. The things we find via Google!

I was just in Port Townsend for the first time a couple of weeks ago for the high school graduation. I was really impressed with the kids. What a wonderful place to call home.

I also read your post about your Mom and feel your pain. I lost my Mom and Dad a couple of years ago 8 months to the day apart and shortly after my wife of 22 years divorced me and I had to put my beloved companion dachshund down due to cancer. Rough times. My Mom was so special to me – I took care of her for most of her adult life as she dealt with MS. She lived life with such courage. My dad was there, but I was the one she always counted on. She was born and raised in Tacoma. I went by her childhood home overlooking the Sound. Wonderful memories.

I enjoyed reading some your blog entries – it’s great to have such fond memories of your mom. The memories you keep in your mind will become brighter as the pain slowly withers away. Peace to you.
